Planning lighting around how you use the property
Good exterior lighting starts with how the property gets used. Front entries and the garage apron need reliable light. Side yards and gates need enough light to walk safely without lighting up the neighbour's bedroom. Decks and patios usually need layers: brighter near stairs or the barbecue, softer where people sit.
On the visit I look at your existing exterior circuits, panel capacity, whether runs should go underground or along the house, where fixtures can mount, and how our winters will treat the install. Low-voltage landscape lighting and line-voltage circuits are different tools, and the right choice depends on run lengths and fixture type.
If you're also opening ceilings for pot lights, or adding security cameras for the porch and driveway, plan the routes together so the house only gets opened once.
What install day looks like
The scope is written before any tools come out: fixture count, switch or control locations, cable routes, any trenching, and whether photocells, timers or smart controls are included. If power needs to be off for a new breaker, you'll know the window ahead of time.
Outdoors the details matter: weatherproof boxes, the right connectors, proper burial depth, and fixtures aimed at surfaces instead of into people's eyes. I handle the ESA permit and inspection on permitted work. If your panel is already full, adding outdoor lighting may mean a panel upgrade first. That's not an upsell. It's how you avoid tripped breakers and unsafe workarounds.
Timing matters in Niagara too. Frozen ground can push trenching back, so spring and early fall are easier for buried runs. Wall and eave mounted lights can go in through most of the year. If you have an event date in mind, tell me when you book.
Cost and what's included
Price depends on fixture count and quality, cable lengths, buried or surface runs, the control method, and whether panel work is needed. A quote after I see the property is the number that matters.
- Assessment of exterior circuits and panel capacity
- Layout for entries, driveways, steps and patios
- Installation of the agreed fixtures, controls and protection
- ESA permit and inspection on permitted work
- Clean work around gardens and finished surfaces
If you're interested in smart home wiring, outdoor scenes and schedules can be planned in without turning a simple path-light job into a big automation project.
